The Kano State Police Command has arrested a man who allegedly posed as a police officer to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public.
Spokesperson of the Command, Abdullahi Kiyawa, said the suspect, a 33-year-old Nasiru Shitu from Kofar Waika Quarters in Kano, was apprehended on Sunday evening at Kofar Dawanau while wearing what appeared to be a police uniform.
Kiyawa said the arrest was made around 5p.m. following multiple reports of extortion activities by fake police officers in the area.
According to Kano Police spokesman, preliminary investigations revealed that Shitu was neither a serving police officer nor a member of the Police Special Constabulary.
“He is an impostor who has been masquerading as a police officer to extort unsuspecting members of the public,” Kiyawa said.
He added that the suspect will be charged to court for prosecution while noting that further investigation was ongoing to determine the extent of his activities and any possible accomplices.
While calling on residents to report any information or complaints about similar cases, the spokesperson quoted the state Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Bakori, to have reiterated the Command’s commitment to taking proactive measures to safeguard the wellbeing of all residents in the state.
