The non-teaching staff of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), have declared that they are ready to join the nationwide indefinite strike as may be directed by their national leadership if the federal government fails to act before October 6.

Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Comrade Linus Akata

and Comrade William Amu, cairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) in UNN, disclosed this in Nsukka yesterday while speaking with newsmen.

They said their members were being mobilized for the proposed strike if, at the end of the ultimatum on October 6, the government still refused to meet their demands.

“We are ready to join the nationwide strike as may be directed by the JAC of SSANU/NASU national leadership.

The strike will be total and comprehensive as our members are ready to withdraw their services.

“Nigerians should hold the government responsible if the nationwide indefinite strike by non-teaching staff in public universities starts on October 6, having given government enough time to address our demands,” they said.

The chairmen of SSANU and NASU in UNN said some of their demands include the continued silence and inaction of the Federal Government’s Renegotiation Committee regarding the 2009 agreement and the continued withholding of salaries of members who participated in the 2022 industrial action.

Others, they said, are the failure to release the outstanding two months’ withheld salaries as a demonstration of good faith; third-party deductions from the already paid two months of withheld salaries yet to be remitted; and the inability of government to pay some earned allowances for members, among others.
