Veteran Golfer Yusuf Wins 2025 TYB-IGRCC Independence Golf Tourney

The 2025 TYB-IGRCC Independence Golf Tournament in commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, culminated in a thrilling climax as veteran golfer Kwadiri Kwaga Yusuf emerged as the overall champion. The week-long event took place at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club in Abuja amid tidy security.

Yusuf, playing off a handicap of 16, achieved a cumulative gross score of 80 and a net score of 67 to secure the top prize from a field of over 400 golfers.

After his victory, Yusuf attributed his success to perseverance and determination. “I wasn’t scheduled for the regular session. I registered as a veteran but was drawn into the regular group. I accepted the challenge and gave it my best,” he explained. “It was a tough five-hour round. I’m glad I stayed the course, and I thank my playing partners for their encouragement.”

The tournament which was put together to honour Nigeria’s rich history while celebrating both serving and retired personnel of the Nigerian Army, showcasing intense competition across various categories.

In the men’s (21–28 handicap) group, DD Dilli emerged as net winner, playing off a handicap of 22 and returning a gross score of 89 and a net of 67. TYB-IGRCC Captain, Maj.-Gen. S.S. Jiya, claimed the gross title, playing off a handicap of 21 with a gross score of 90 and a net of 69.

In the (13–20 handicap) category, Dalhat Ladan was the net winner, while Usman Danladi claimed the gross title, both delivering strong performances. In the lower handicap brackets, Rueben Eguche (net winner) and Gabriel Godwin (gross winner) excelled in the (6–12) division, while Babajide Ashebu (net winner) and Timothy Mike (gross winner) topped the (0–5) division.

In the guest category, Paul Odoh Jr. took the net prize, while Effiong Okon achieved the best gross score.

In the ladies’ events, Faridah Wada was crowned the best net winner in the (0–18) category, playing off a handicap of 11 with a gross score of 82 and a net of 71. Longdi Paul Pwaspo, with a gross score of 80, claimed the best overall gross title. Tessy Johnson (best net) and Sarah Nkwariża (best gross) distinguished themselves in the (19–36) category.

Justina Gideon won the gross title in the guests category, while Jennifer Shaapera took home the net award.

Veterans also showcased their skills, with Mike Ekoja claiming the veteran net prize, and Ahmed Oseni and M. Richard Obioha excelling in their respective categories. In the Super Veteran category, Dibu Ojerinde and Sunday Ehindero demonstrated consistency and resilience to emerge as top performers.

Special guest at the closing ceremony, Mr. Tosin Adeola Ajayi, Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), praised the tournament’s impact and expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff for the invitation. He commended the spirit of unity fostered by the event. “As we mark 65 years of nationhood, occasions like this remind us of our unity and shared purpose,” he remarked. “Let us always focus on what unites us as a people.”

He reaffirmed the DSS’s commitment to collaborating with the Nigerian Army to ensure the nation’s security. “That synergy spans decades. We will continue to work together until we achieve a secure and prosperous Nigeria.”

Ajayi also commended President Bola Tinubu for his support of security agencies. “I congratulate all Nigerians on the 65th Independence celebration. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The chair of the organising committee, Dr. James Eromosele Agbonhese, described the tournament as a milestone for golf and national unity. “This is a significant moment, not just for TYB Golf Club but for the entire Nigerian golfing community,” he stated. “This inaugural Independence Cup is a celebration of our shared heritage and the unifying power of sport.”

He likened golf to the journey of nation-building, noting, “Golf teaches patience, strategy, and adaptability—qualities that resonate with our national spirit.” Agbonhese expressed gratitude to the military command and club leadership for entrusting him with the role of LOC Chairman. “I’m grateful for the opportunity. The dedication of the committee members made this tournament a success,” he added, acknowledging the sponsors, partners, and participants for their invaluable support.

“Your contribution has brought this vision to life. To the golfers—this day was for you. You played with integrity and joy.” He emphasised the event’s potential as a symbol of collective aspiration. “The Independence Cup is more than a competition; it represents focus, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence.

“Let this not only be a celebration of our independence but also of our commitment to building a better future—together.”
