Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, yesterday flagged off the rehabilitation of the 15-kilometre Old Karshi Road. He declared it as a fulfilment of President Bola Tinubu’s promise to the people and a testament to his administration’s commitment to infrastructural renewal.

The project, which stretches from Kado Village to Dei-Dei, was awarded to Lubrik Construction Company, the same firm which handled the Saburi 1 and Saburi 2 roads.

Wike, who described the rehabilitation as an ’emergency’ project approved by the president upon assuming office in 2023, framed the project as a direct response to the needs of the people, championed by their local representatives.

“You will recall that when we commissioned the Saburi roads, I said they could only be complete if this Old Karshi Road was also rehabilitated,” he said.

“Today, to the glory of God, we are here to fulfill that promise. I made a commitment to the traders and residents here that it was not just a promise in words but one that would be fulfilled,” he said.

He also praised the chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher Maikalangu, for his effective representation.

“I remember when we commissioned the Saburi Road and I asked him to tell us what his people still needed.

He mentioned this same Old Karshi Road.

“That is what representation means, choosing people who know your needs and are committed to pursuing them,” he said.

The minister took a clear swipe at opposition figures, urging residents not to be deceived by ’empty stories’ from those who had failed in the past.

“Do not pay attention to those who had opportunities to contribute to Abuja’s development in the past but failed to deliver.

“We gave them a first chance; they failed. We gave them a second chance; they failed again. If we make the mistake of giving them a third chance, they will destroy everything.

“In total, we have 27 flag-offs lined up, something that has never happened before in Abuja.

This is the first time, and it’s happening under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration,” he said.

Wike also directed the construction company to prioritise the employment of local youths and women from the community, ensuring they benefit economically from the project.

In her vote of thanks, the FCT minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, applauded President Tinubu for his continuous support and for prioritising projects that touch the lives of ordinary citizens.

She emphasised the road’s significance, stating, “This road is a lifeline that serves thousands of commuters daily, linking communities, reducing travel time, improving road safety, and stimulating socio-economic activities across the axis.”
