The vice chancellor (VC) of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Prof. Maduebibisi Iwe, has decried the challenges the teaching profession faces in the country.

In a paper he presented at the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, themed “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession”, in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, he listed the challenges as poor funding, inadequate logistics and infrastructure, limited access to quality resources and misunderstanding of the profession.

The VC, who described teaching as a collaborative profession involving education and mentorship, commended teachers for their sacrifices in building an enlightened society.

At the event, Abia State governor, Alex Otti, said education remains the bedrock of development in every society, hence his administration’s policy of free and compulsory basic and secondary education.
Represented by the deputy governor, Ikechukwu Emetu, the governor said his administration believes that investing in education will not only be a source of pride but also a driving force for the state’s overall development.

According to him, the theme of the celebration resonates deeply with his government’s vision of ensuring that every child receives quality and inclusive education in line with global standards.
