Atiku Backs Sowore Over Call For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has decried the continued detention of the leader of the proscribed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, saying the development was an open sore on Nigeria’s conscience and a stain on collective belief in the rule of law.

Atiku said defying previous court orders that granted Kanu bail was an abuse of power and an assault on justice, expressing support for activist Omoyele Sowore’s campaign for Kanu’s immediate release.

LEADERSHIP reports that Sowore had on Wednesday challenged South-East political leaders to join him in a peaceful match to Aso Rock Villa to demand Kanu’s release from detention or forget their rhetoric.

Apparently, reacting to Sowore’s call, Atiku took to his social media handles on Thursday to say they will fail as patriots if they allow Kanu’s case to fester.

The former vice president wrote: “The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains an open sore on our nation’s conscience and a stain on our belief in the rule of law.

“Defying court orders that granted him bail is an abuse of power and an assault on justice.

“I, therefore, lend my voice in full support of the campaign led by Omoyele Sowore for his immediate release or due prosecution.

“We fail as patriots if we allow Kanu’s case to fester as yet another wound this nation refuses to heal.”
