Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending weeks of speculation over his political future.

The development, which caught many by surprise, was made public by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

In a major twist, Governor Diri’s resignation from the PDP did not come alone as he was joined by 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, who also announced their exit from the party.

“Gov. Douye Diri resigns from PDP alongside 23 members of the House of Assembly”, Alabrah posted.

The mass defection marked one of the biggest political shake-ups in the state’s history, raising questions about the future of the PDP in Bayelsa, which has been its stronghold since 1999.

Although no official reason has been attributed to the move, political observers believe this may be linked to growing internal divisions within the party and ongoing speculations about Diri’s possible alignment with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reactions have continued to pour in from across the state as residents and political leaders await the Governor’s next declaration on his next political direction.
