Stop Harassing Widows, Gov Otu Warns ‘Tax Collectors’

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has warned extortionists masquerading as tax and levy collectors to stop exploiting widows in the state or face the government’s wrath.

He gave the warning during his 66th birthday celebration, which was attended by over 7,000 widows at the state Library Complex in Calabar on Friday night.

The governor expressed his commitment to supporting vulnerable groups, particularly widows and announced that he would soon devise a means to receive complaints and ensure that those extorting money from widows return what they had taken.

He also splashed N100,000 on each widow present at the ceremony, acknowledging their importance in society.

The event highlighted Governor Otu’s dedication to the welfare of widows, with Mrs Uduak Spencer, leader of the widows, expressing gratitude for his kindness.

Another widow, Mrs Felicia Eyaba, praised the governor for celebrating his birthday with them, saying,

“Widows are the least remembered but here you are celebrating with us. You have done well.”

Governor Otu’s wife, Mrs Eyoawan Otu, also expressed joy at the turnout, thanking the widows for their presence. The governor emphasised the importance of women in society, stating that without their support, he and his team would not be in the government house.
