DICON-D7G has called for increased local production of military equipment, technology transfer and strategic partnerships to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported arms and strengthen national security.
The Chief Executive Officer, Mr Osman Chennar, stated this as the organisation participated as a major sponsor of the ongoing African Defence Industries Exhibition (AFRIDEX) in Lagos.
Chennar said reliance on foreign defence suppliers could expose Nigeria’s military to supply-chain disruptions, equipment delivery delays and other challenges capable of undermining operational readiness.
He said developing indigenous defence capacity was essential to Nigeria’s strategic independence and long-term security.
“Developing local capacity in defence is not just about manufacturing equipment; it is about strengthening national security, building Nigerian expertise and ensuring that our Armed Forces have more reliable access to the capabilities they need,” the organisation said.
DICON-D7G argued that sustained investment in local manufacturing, research, innovation and skills development would create jobs, retain defence spending within the domestic economy and position Nigeria to supply military equipment to other African countries.
