The excitement is palpable as football enthusiasts in Abuja gear up for a historic showdown that promises to celebrate talent, culture, and camaraderie—the Barcelona Legends versus the African Legends at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Saturday, 25 October 2025. This event transcends mere sport; it is a gathering of football luminaries who have made an indelible mark on the game.

The significance of this monumental encounter is steeped in history. Organised by the Atom Foundation in collaboration with the Transcorp Hilton, the match underscores a commitment to supporting young girls. Proceeds from the event will be directed towards empowering girls through education and sports initiatives. This intersection of football and philanthropy adds a meaningful layer to the occasion, inviting fans not only to witness a spectacular sporting event but also to contribute to a noble cause.

At a pre-match press conference held at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja yesterday, nostalgia and excitement filled the air. Barcelona legend Gaizka Mendieta Zabala, celebrated for his midfield prowess at the Catalan club, addressed the audience. His presence alone evoked memories of thrilling performances, but it was his remarks regarding Nigerian football that truly resonated. Mendieta praised the passion, resilience, and determination exhibited by Nigerian players, highlighting the rich football culture that permeates the country.

“Nigeria has always been a country that produces exceptional talent,” Mendieta remarked, his admiration evident. “I know Finidi George at Ajax, Jay Jay Okocha, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Sunday Oliseh, and many others. It’s an honour to be part of an event that showcases such incredible skills and dedication to the sport.” His sentiments reflect a broader recognition of African players in the global football arena, where their contributions are celebrated and revered.

In response, Dele Ayenugba, the two-time CAF Champions League winner and former Super Eagles goalkeeper, echoed Mendieta’s sentiments. His enthusiasm was infectious as he spoke about the match being a fantastic opportunity for former players to reunite and relive cherished memories on the pitch.
“This game is more than just a match; it’s about friendship and the love of football,” Ayenugba stated. “I look forward to reconnecting with my fellow players, sharing stories, and enjoying the beautiful game together.”

Dr Zanaib Mohammed, representative of the Atom Foundation, highlighted the initiative’s focus this year, having reached over 5,000 individuals with medical support in the previous edition. “This year, we have decided to focus on the girl child. Our campaign, ‘Keep Her Learning’, aims to educate them about menstrual health. Menstrual health management is a significant issue, particularly in rural areas where many young girls lack access to sanitary products due to poverty. When their period arrives during school hours, they often face stigma and personal embarrassment, leading to isolation.”

“The ‘Keep Her Learning’ programme aims to provide menstrual education for youth aged 10 to 18, offering disposable sanitary products and teaching them how to use them properly. We will also educate teachers to help inform students, as many girls are unaware of what to expect before their first period.
Our goal this year is to reach approximately 20,000 schoolgirls aged 10 to 18. Our mission is to ensure that no girl misses school or feels ashamed because of her menstruation,” Dr Mohammed explained.

Mr Martin Zarybnicky, General Manager of Transcorp Hilton, expressed his support for the Atom Foundation’s laudable initiative, stating they are pleased to partner for the second consecutive year. He also shared his admiration for Barcelona FC and both their legends and African stars.

The Barcelona Legends team will feature a blend of iconic players, each bringing their unique flair to the pitch. Fans can expect to see the likes of Mendieta himself, alongside other stars who have donned the famous Blaugrana jersey. Their skills, honed over years of professional play, will be on full display as they compete against an equally formidable African Legends squad.

The African Legends team, composed of former stars from various nations across Africa, promises to deliver a dynamic and exhilarating style of play. This team exemplifies the immense talent that has emerged from the continent, showcasing players who have made significant contributions to their national teams and clubs worldwide. As they face off against the Barcelona Legends, the clash of styles—European finesse versus African strength and creativity—will undoubtedly create a captivating spectacle for fans.
