The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has commenced its activities lined up to commemorate its Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years of excellence in sports journalism today.
Founded in 1964, SWAN has been the voice and conscience of sports in Nigeria, chronicling historic triumphs, amplifying athletes’ journeys, and shaping national conversations through credible and ethical reporting.
A statement by the Chairman of Media/Publicity for the SWAN Diamond Jubilee and 69th Anniversary Celebration, Chimezie Anaso, and Secretary Hembadoon Orsar, indicates that today, Thursday, 30 October 2025, will feature a high-profile lecture and panel discussion on “The Power of Sports Media: Honouring its Legacy, Shaping the Future” at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
According to them, the Special Guest of Honour, Senator Dr. Oluremi Tinubu, will grace the occasion, while the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, will chair the event.
“The lecture session will feature keynote speakers, including Aisha Falode, Emeka Enyadike, and Philip Shaibu, discussing topics such as women in sports media, ethical reporting, and political will in national development.
“A novelty match between Team SWAN Veterans and Team NSC will be played on Thursday evening, showcasing camaraderie among sports journalists, administrators, and celebrity athletes.
“The climax of the celebration will take place on Friday, 31 October, with a Full Council Meeting, the investiture of national patrons, and the launch of the SWAN House Appeal Fund.”
