The Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed a Bill for the creation of 29 additional local government areas (LGAs) in the state, bringing the total number of LGAs to 49 if approved by the National Assembly.

The proposed legislation, titled “A Bill to provide for the Creation of 29 New Additional Local Government Areas in Bauchi State, 2025”, was recently passed by the State Assembly and forwarded to the National Assembly for consideration by the Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution.

In a letter signed by the acting deputy Clerk of the State House of Assembly, Musa Yerima, and addressed to the chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, Senator Barau Jibrin, he stated, “I am pleased to inform you that the Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed into law a Bill to provide for the creation of 29 new additional Local Government Areas in Bauchi State, 2025.”

The letter, made available to journalists in Bauchi on Thursday, explained that the new LGAs would remain inchoate until the National Assembly enacts an enabling law in accordance with Section 8(5) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“The additional Local Government Areas listed in Schedule II to this law are inchoate until such time as the National Assembly shall pass an Act to make consequential provisions with respect to the names of the said additional Local Government Areas,” the letter read in part.

“The said law is hereby forwarded to the Chairman, Joint Committee on Constitution Review, National Assembly, for further necessary action,” the letter added.

The new proposed LGAs and their headquarters include Balma (Nasaru as headquarters), Bauchi East (Women Centre as headquarters), Bauchi West (Miri), Beshongo (Beni), Bula (Bununu), Burra (Burra), Chinade (Chinade), Dagauda/Jalam (Dagauda).
