The First Lady of Zamfara State, Huriyya Lawal, has reiterated her commitment to raising public awareness, promoting early detection, and showing solidarity and support for cancer victims and survivors.

Mrs Lawal stated this while leading a Cancer awareness walk campaign through the major streets of Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, to drive the message to residents.

She was joined by the wife of the Deputy Governor, civil society groups, medical professionals, associations, and youths in an awareness walk aimed at educating the public about cancer prevention and control.

The walk commenced at the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital and proceeded through Sani Abacha Way and Bello Barau Street, terminating at the Government House in Gusau, where the First Lady addressed the participants.

She emphasised the need for early detection and regular screening as key strategies for preventing cancer.

Medical professionals at the event also emphasised the importance of sustained public awareness, noting that early detection and regular medical checks are crucial to saving lives.

Cancer, one of the leading causes of death, particularly among women, is real but preventable if people are equipped with the proper knowledge and awareness.

It is therefore imperative to sustain public enlightenment efforts, both in urban centres and at the grassroots, to combat the disease effectively.

Recently, the Governor’s wife called on women and young girls to prioritise their health and encourage others to do the same to ensure a healthy society.

She made this call while taking the campaign against cancer to some schools in the Gusau Local Government Area, where she educated young girls on the importance of having the correct information about cancer and protecting themselves from the deadly disease.

According to statistics, about 14,000 women die of cancer every year in Nigeria, making it one of the leading causes of death among women.

This explains why the Zamfara State First Lady is leading the campaign against the disease in schools to sensitise young girls on the issue and how they can protect themselves.

She urged Nigerians to stand together in solidarity and support for victims of cancer, regardless of their differences, and to confront the deadly disease collectively.

The Governor’s wife also called on participants and Nigerians at large to raise awareness about cancer in rural communities to help prevent the disease across the country.
