Former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, has called on President Bola Tinubu to shun confrontation and embrace dialogue to resolve the impasse with President Donald Trump of the United States of America.

This is even as he appealed to Nigerians to rally round Tinubu in his effort to reposition the country.

Bafarawa made the appeal on Tuesday in a statement made available to Leadership, following the threat from the government of the United States (US) to take military action against Nigeria over allegations that Christians in Nigeria are facing genocide under the watch of President Tinubu.

He said Tinubu should shun any confrontation with Trump and embrace other channels of resolving the issue saying it is in the best interest of Nigeria to foster and strengthen their long-standing relationship.

The former governor said “I advise President Tinubu to shun confrontation and reach out to the American government to hear Nigeria’s version of the story.

“America and Nigeria are strategic partners in international politics and diplomacy. It will, therefore be in the best interest of Nigeria to foster and strengthen this long-standing relationship”, Bafarawa said.

He however called on the president to take the concerns of the international community on the security situation in Nigeria seriously and redouble his effort to tame insurgency and other forms of criminality in the country.

While appealing to Nigerians to support the Tinubu administration, Bafarawa called on Tinubu to work harder in the area of securing the country so that situations which triggered the threat from the US would no longer arise.

Meanwhile, the former governor has called on Nigerians to support Tinubu in his efforts to reposition the country for good.

Bafarawa said all Nigerians irrespective of religion, ethnicity, region, and even political affiliations

need to support Tinubu to succeed considering the enormous challenges that the country is facing.

According to him, Nigerians should tow the the path of oneness to support Tinubu, saying President Tinubu’s failure is a collective failure, as well as his success.

He said “I call on all Nigerians to join hands together with President Tinubu to succeed because his failure is our failure, and his success is our success. He needs our collective support”, Bafarawa said.

It will be recalled that the US Congress had recently launched an investigation into reports of Christian genocide in Nigeria and designated it a country of particular concern.
