About 2,350 persons, recently displaced by the crisis across three communities in Takum local government area, are currently taking refuge in Manya Primary School, Ikam 2 Primary School and Dutse Primary School, respectively.

The crisis which started on October 28, 2025, between suspected militia herders and Tiv farmers in Shawnee, New Gboko and Tomyi manya communities, was reported to have lasted for three days.

Following the incident, the Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (TSEMA), has begun profiling the names of persons from the affected areas, with the view of providing relief to them.

The TSEMA team lead, Daniel Danga, said the exercise was part of the agency’s proactive measures to respond to emergency situations for necessary action.

According to him, the profiling was aimed at collecting accurate data on the affected persons to enable targeted response and support from the state government and organisations.

“The data will facilitate the provision of essential services, including food, shelter, healthcare, and other humanitarian assistance,” he said.

Danga, who is the head of Technical Department of the agency, reiterated the commitment of TSEMA’s executive secretary to providing succour to cushion the plight of the IDPs.

He explained that, “the exercise underscores TSEMA’s commitment, under the leadership of Executive Secretary Dr. Echuseh Audu, to supporting IDPs and affected communities in Taraba State, in line with the policy direction of Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas on disaster management and emergency response, promoting peace and stability in the state,” he said.

In another development, the residents of Chanchanji community in Takum local government are apprehensive over an alarm that suspected armed herders plan to attack the community.

When contacted on telephone, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP. Victor Ishaku, said he was just getting the information and would investigate and get back to our correspondent.

He however didn’t get back to LEADERSHIP as of press time.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that people have started deserting Chanchanji to neighbouring villages for safety.

Terkula Yooso and Philip Abur, both members of the Chanchanji community, raised the alarm in separate interviews with newsmen, saying the armed men were sighted moving into Chanchanji Ward from the neighbouring Donga local government area.

“Intelligence gathering by the locals indicates that the group is plotting simultaneous assaults on Peva-Chanchanji and Kufai Ahmadu towns all in the Chanchanji ward of Takum local government.”

Yooso, particularly explained that the development has heightened tension in the area, considering the history of previous attacks.

“These same militants have attacked surrounding villages several times and displaced thousands, many of our people are now taking refuge in Peva and Amadu towns. We cannot go through this again.”

Abur, on his part also confirmed the movement, and urged security agencies to act swiftly before the situation escalates.

“We don’t want another tragedy. The signs are clear. The government must intervene now,” he said.
