Bribery Allegations: Group Threatens Legal Action Against Anti Jibrin Campaigners

A political group under the umbrella body of All Tinubu/Barau Support Groups Coalition, has threatened legal action against members of the defunct Gawuna Campaign Organisation over what it described as false and malicious allegations against the deputy senate president, Senator Barau Jibrin.

The coalition, led by its convener and director-general, Hafizu Liman made this known while addressing journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists secretariat in Kano yesterday.

He condemned an earlier press briefing held by Alwan Hassan and Hon. Muhammadu Badaru, which accused Senator Barau and Senate President Godswill Akpabio of receiving a $10 million bribe to block the confirmation of Abdullahi Ramat as chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

He described the allegations as politically motivated, mischievous, and fabricated, saying they were aimed at tarnishing Senator Barau’s reputation and undermining his political standing in Kano.

“We have instructed our lawyers to initiate legal action against these agents of mischief and lies.

“The people of Kano and Nigerians at large should disregard these baseless claims. Senator Barau has always supported the progress of Kano indigenes and remains committed to national development,” Liman stated.

He explained that the NERC confirmation process was ongoing and had not yet reached the Senate floor, stressing that it was laughable to suggest that Senator Barau was scheming to subvert it.

Convener of the Grassroots Initiative Concept had accused Senators Barau and Akpabio of sabotaging President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda by allegedly delaying Ramat’s confirmation for personal and political reasons.

Hassan claimed that the two APC leaders had repeatedly obstructed the appointments of qualified Kano citizens, describing the trend as a disturbing attempt to personalise power and limit opportunities based on political insecurity.

He urged the Senate leadership to respect due process and allow the confirmation of Ramat, whom he described as a young technocrat with the vision and competence to drive Nigeria’s power sector reform.
