The wife of Senator Jarigbe Jarigbe, the lawmaker representing Cross River North Senatorial District, Dr. Offiong Jarigbe, has urged politicians to encourage their spouses to further their education so they can serve as true partners in nation building.

Dr. Jarigbe spoke to journalists on Saturday shortly after she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Enterprise at the 12th Convocation Ceremony of Base University, Abuja.

She said Nigeria’s universities are now better equipped with modern teaching facilities and intellectual capacity to attract more foreign students.

According to her, “Our universities are so equipped with renowned professors and other teachers with high intellectual capabilities to compete favourably with foreign universities.

“We need to return to the old system whereby expatriates compete with Nigerians to study in our universities.”

The federal lawmaker’s wife urged Nigerian men to support their wives to further their studies, stressing that women should be regarded as partners in building society.

“Gone are the days when women were seen to be only good in the kitchen and the other room,” she said.

Over 45 wives of senators attended the event, where the chairman of the Senate Committee on Gas, Senator Jarigbe, also canvassed regular re-tooling of Nigerian women to enable them contribute more to nation building.

He said men should encourage and support their wives to further their education.
