The Museum for West Africa Arts (MOWAA) on Sunday played host to large contingents of tourists from Europe, Canada, United Kingdom and Germany in a preview opening ahead of its formal inauguration in 2026.

According to an earlier statement issued by the management of MOWAA, the decision for the grand opening in 2026 was to allow for the completion of additional buildings across the museum’s campus and to ensure proper engagement with all relevant stakeholders.

The management reaffirmed that MOWAA holds the people of Benin and the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, in the highest esteem, stressing that the institution would never act in any way that disrespects the revered throne or Edo heritage.
Meanwhile some protesters on Sunday stormed the venue of the event in an apparent move to stall the occasion.

The presence of security agents however prevented the situation from degenerating as tourists who came from around the world were hurriedly rushed into a waiting bus.
