Jigawa State governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has announced that his administration has successfully reduced poverty by 15 percent, according to independent reports from the Bureau of Statistics.
The governor revealed this while speaking at the graduation ceremony of 150 youths trained in various skills. The programme was organised by the state government in collaboration with the Kafin Hausa Community Forum.
Governor Namadi stated that since he assumed office, a key priority has been the empowerment of youth and women through skills acquisition and vocational training. The initiative also focuses on supporting citizens in their own businesses to foster job creation and poverty reduction.
He said that under his 12-point agenda, the government targets a 10 percent annual reduction in poverty. However due to assiduous efforts, the state exceeded this goal by achieving a 15 percent reduction last year.
Governor Namadi added that his government will continue to work in this direction, collaborating with any government, individual, or corporate body interested in joining the fight against poverty and supporting job creation for the state’s growth and development.
He then warned the beneficiaries of the training and empowerment packages that anyone found misusing or selling the equipment provided for them will face the full wrath of the law.
Speaking at the occasion, the director-general of the Jigawa State Empowerment Agency, Dr. Habibi
Kanya said the youth were trained in various skills, including Artificial Intelligence and Information Technology, Tailoring, Plumbing, Solar-powered Electrical work, Leatherwork, Bakery, and Tiles.
He confirmed that each graduate received a set of equipment required for their trade.
He noted that over N52 million was spent to procure the equipment donated to the beneficiaries.
The director general reiterated the agency’s commitment to collaborate with the Kafin Hausa Community Forum to properly monitor the beneficiaries and ensure the effective utilization of the investment made in them.
