Oyo State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has dismissed the report that a teacher with Soun High School, Ogbomoso, Mr Fatai Adegoke, died from assault on him by his students.

Report earlier surfaced that the late Mr. Adegoke died after he was fiercely beaten by some of us his students whom he cautioned for gambling within school hours.

However, in a statement by the Union’s State Secretary, Salami Olukayode with the title: “Emerging Facts About the Sudden Demise of Mr. Fatai Adegoke: A Correction of Different Misgivings,” the NUT said the deceased died from cancer-related illness.

“A well circulated account of Ogbomoso based tabloid posited that Mr. Fatai Adegoke was unethically attacked by his students who ran foul of the school’s rule.

“It was held that the attack was at the point of administering punishment on the student but, a reliable information gathered by the NUT due diligent search and investigation showed that, Mr. Fatai Adegoke died of cancer-related illness which he had nursed for quite an age as against various opinions being held and peddled by varieties of social media bloggers.

“And, this was further corroborated and affirmed by a larger percentage of his family members during his burial and subsequent (Fidau) prayer held in his honour,” Olukayode said.

He added, “It needs to be noted that various spirited individuals, colleagues, people of different religious faiths including the zonal leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), ANCOPSS and TESCOM in Ogbomoso did not forsake Mr. Fatai Adegoke when they were mostly needed.

“In fact, it was recorded that a huge amount of money was donated by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ogbomoso zone to cushion the effect of his medical bills while at Florence Hospital before he was transferred to seek an advanced medical treatments at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, and this was objectively done to safe his life unconditionally, but it pleases God to take his life as the Sole Author and Finisher of our faith.”

He stressed that discipline of students has no link with the deceased teacher’s death as being held by a fraction of the society “who lack facts about his medical history all along.”

While commiserating with his beloved family members and colleagues at large, the NUT prayed Almighty Allah whom he diligently worshipped while alive to grant him eternal rest.

“Having said this, we wish to advise the public, including social media users to be engaging in an adequate diagnosis of fact before news is cast so as to get better perspective of the inherent issues before being ignorantly shared.

“This, when properly done will help reduce peddling of cock and bull stories in our societies,” Olukayode said while praying that the soul of the departed teacher rest in eternal peace.
