The Federal Capital Territory (FCT 1) Branch of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has joined its counterparts worldwide to mark the 2025 International Accountants’ Day with a renewed call for integrity, transparency, and accountability in financial management.

Speaking during the celebration in Abuja, the FCT 1 Branch Chairman, Elder Allan Tsaku, said the event aligns with the global observance of International Accountants’ Day, emphasizing the vital role accountants play in promoting sound economic management and national development.

“Today’s event joins the global celebration of International Accountants’ Day. We promote transparency, proper record keeping, and accountability in all our dealings. When these are maintained, there will be no leakages in the system, and the economy will thrive,” Tsaku said.

He noted that accountants are central to ensuring prudent government spending and efficient use of public funds, adding that the profession enforces value-for-money principles in budget implementation.

“Accountants ensure that what is budgeted for is what is actually spent. We carry out proper audit checks on all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to ensure there are no extra-budgetary activities. This promotes fiscal discipline and strengthens economic growth,” he explained.

Highlighting ANAN’s role in promoting professionalism and sustainable development, Tsaku said the association trains and retrains its members through the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) programmes conducted annually across the country.

“ANAN continues to strengthen accountability mechanisms in public financial management through continuous learning and ethical standards,” he added.

He urged members to uphold the dignity of the profession, describing accountants as custodians of financial integrity.

“Accountants are professionals who keep the world’s finances running smoothly. This day gives us dignity and reminds us of our global significance,” Tsaku said.

Also speaking, the Branch Secretary, Mr. Idoko Stephen Godday, stressed that sustainable global impact depends on the profession’s commitment to transparency and ethics.

“Our role goes beyond numbers. We uphold accountability and professionalism that move the world economy forward. ANAN is preparing the next generation of accountants to meet the demands of the digital and green economy,” he said.

The Immediate Past Chairman, Mr. Andrew Elisha Shava, called on accountants to maintain integrity and professionalism, noting that financial discipline is key to national progress.

“We are financial advisers. Once accountants display integrity and transparency, the nation will definitely achieve its goals,” he stated.

The Chairperson, Media and Publicity Committee, Ms. Tulo Jotham, described accounting as a noble profession essential to economic growth and societal order.

“We are celebrating ourselves for shaping businesses and societies through transparent financial record keeping. Accounting is a profession built on integrity and accountability,” she said.

Also speaking, Mr. Moses Olamide Shodipe noted that the accounting profession today stands at the intersection of technology, ethics, and policy. He observed that artificial intelligence, automation, and data analytics are transforming practice, enhancing efficiency, but also demanding vigilance, ethics, and foresight.

“No matter how technology evolves, our core values should remain timeless — integrity, objectivity, professional competence, confidentiality, and due care,” Shodipe stated.

In her remarks, Mrs Olayiwola Tehirat Jimoh traced the history of accounting to its founder, Luca Pacioli, stressing that the discipline remains the backbone of every economy.

Like Shodipe, she urged young accountants to embrace technology, innovation, and continuous learning to remain relevant in the evolving global financial landscape.

This year’s celebration, themed “Driving Sustainable Impact Through Accountable Policy Implementation,” reaffirmed ANAN FCT 1 Branch’s commitment to fostering ethical financial practices that support Nigeria’s economic growth and sustainable development.
