A 96-year-old woman identified as Habiba Ado has been found dead after falling into a toilet pit in Sarai Village of Dawakin Kudu local government area of Kano State.
A statement issued by the spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif, said the agency received a distress call around 9:27 a.m. on Thursday morning from one Usman Adamu, reporting that a woman had fallen into a toilet pit in the area.
Upon arrival, the rescue team from the agency’s headquarters discovered that the deceased had been missing for four days before she was found in the toilet pit.
Yusif explained that relatives of the victim told officials that the elderly woman had been battling mental illness before the incident.
“Our rescue team successfully retrieved her body from the pit unconscious, but she was later confirmed dead,” Yusif stated.
He added that the remains of the deceased were handed over to the ward head of Sarai village, Musa Muhammad.
The agency further expressed concern over the incident and appealed to residents to ensure that open pits and toilet holes were properly covered to prevent similar occurrences.
The spokesperson quoted the Director of the Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, to have commiserated with the family of the deceased and reiterated the agency’s commitment to responding promptly to emergencies across the state.
