Police Decry Rising Gender-Based Violence In Yobe

The Yobe State Police Command has expressed deep concern over the recent increase in cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), particularly rape and child abuse, reported across several Divisional Police Headquarters in the state.

A statement signed by SP Dungus Abdulkarim, Police Public Relations Officer, which was made available to Leadership in Damaturu, stated that from September 2025 to date, the Command recorded 25 cases of rape, mostly involving minors below the age of nine.

He said that, a total of 28 suspects have been arrested, with 10 cases currently undergoing prosecution in court, while investigations continue on others at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

According to the statement, the recent incidents, include the one reported to Jakusko Division of the raping of a 4-year-old girl. On November 9, 2025, at about 0800hrs, detectives apprehended one Rabilu Sani (20) of Jadam Village, Jakusko, for luring a 4-year-old girl into a room and sexually assaulting her.

He said medical examination confirmed severe injuries; investigation also revealed the suspect is HIV positive. The case has been transferred to the SCID for discreet and thorough investigation and will be charged to court upon conclusion.

Also, Fika Division, recorded case of assault on a 5-year-old girl. On November 9, 2025, at about 1100hrs, one Yusuf Garba (23), a grinding machine operator of Dumbulwa Village, lured a 5-year-old girl into his shop and assaulted her.

The victim was immediately taken to the hospital, while the suspect remains in SCID custody for prosecution.

Tarmuwa Division handled the case of the gang raping of a 16-year-old girl.

On November 6, 2025, at about 1700hrs, a distress call reported that a 16-year-old girl was attacked on her way back from a Maulud celebration in Babban Gida.

The operatives tracked and arrested Audu Ado (22) and Babangida Alh. Dawaye, both of Galadimawa Village. The suspects confessed to threatening the victim with harmful objects.

The victim is receiving medical care, and the suspects are under investigation at the SCID for prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, strongly condemned these heinous acts and has directed all operatives to handle GBV and rape cases with utmost professionalism and sensitivity, ensure diligent investigation and timely prosecution.

He also warned that no offender will be spared, and anyone involved in such crimes will face the full weight of the law.
