In a move towards enhancing inclusive sports development in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has appointed Hon. Chief Dr. Jim Chimezie Okolo as the chairman of the Caretaker Committee for the FCT Para-Volley Association. This appointment underscores the administration’s ongoing commitment to fostering sports accessibility within the nation’s capital.
The announcement came via a letter dated 29th August 2025, signed by Mr. Luka Istifanus, director of sports for the Federal Capital Territory, and approved on behalf of the Honourable Minister of the FCT.
Dr. Okolo’s term will commence on 1st October 2025 and extend until 30th April 2026, during which he will provide leadership and strategic direction for the association.
Mr. Istifanus’ correspondence praised Dr. Okolo for his “selfless service and immense contributions to sports development in the Federal Capital Territory and beyond,” noting that his extensive experience and humanitarian efforts made him an ideal candidate for this vital role.
Dr. Okolo’s appointment follows the dissolution of all FCT Sports Association Boards in October 2023, after the conclusion of their four-year tenure. To maintain continuity in governance, caretaker committees have been established to oversee the various associations until new boards are inaugurated.
Recognised for his contributions to sports and youth development, Dr. Okolo has received numerous national awards, including the Nigerian Soccer Ambassador Award and his recent investiture as National Patron of Miss Football Nigeria in 2024.
These accolades highlight his conviction that sports can serve as a powerful tool for unity and empowerment.
Upon his appointment, Dr. Okolo expressed his gratitude and described the role as “an opportunity to serve humanity through the power of sports and to create pathways for athletes living with disabilities to thrive.” He committed to strengthening the structures of para-volleyball within the FCT and to promoting inclusivity, ensuring that the association exemplifies transparency, discipline, and progress.
Stakeholders within the sporting community have lauded his appointment as both visionary and well-deserved. They regard Dr. Okolo as a leader capable of harmonising administrative efficiency with compassion and innovation, expressing optimism that his leadership will invigorate para-sports administration in the Federal Capital Territory.
As Dr. Okolo’s mandate progresses until April 2026, there are high expectations for a renewed vision, accountability, and excellence within the FCT Para-Volley Association, potentially positioning Abuja as a leading centre for inclusive sports in Nigeria.
