Police in Yobe State are investigating the disappearance of a corpse from a grave at the Makwalla cemetery in Jakusko local government area of the state, after receiving a report from a resident, one Wakili Gambo, that the grave was dug open by unknown persons.

After receiving the report, a team of policemen from Jakusko Division and community leaders visited the scene and confirmed that the grave had been desecrated and the corpse removed by persons yet to be identified.

Police spokesman, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, told newsmen in Damaturu that an investigation was currently in progress as the command had intensified checks on other graves within the cemetery.

The commissioner of police, Emmanuel Ado, condemned the act, describing it as cannibalistic, diabolical and a serious violation of human dignity and the sanctity of the dead.

He warned that anyone found responsible would face the full wrath of the law.

The command urged members of the community to devise better means of protecting cemeteries, cooperate with the police by providing credible and timely information and always report suspicious movements in and around burial grounds.
