The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba State, Alhaji Abubakar Bawa, resigned his position as chairman of the party in the state on Monday.

Alhaji Bawa also withdrew his membership from the PDP, marking a significant shake-up within the state chapter of the PDP.

Bawa’s resignation comes amid growing political realignments in the state.

Although he did not state any reason for his resignation, many believe it may not be unconnected with the planned defection of Governor Agbu Kefas to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

LEADERSHIP gathered that Bawa was one of those who were absent from the PDP Elective National Convention held on Saturday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Sources within the party revealed that the move may be connected to the ongoing internal crisis and the shifting political atmosphere ahead of expected defections.

In a brief statement confirming his exit, Bawa thanked party stakeholders for the opportunity to serve and wished the PDP success in its future engagements.

The state chairman’s departure is expected to trigger further reactions within the party hierarchy.

LEADERSHIP further gathered that consultations were already underway among PDP leaders to appoint the Deputy Chairman of the party, Mr Obadiah Bitrus, as the acting chairman to stabilise the party and prevent further cracks within its structure.

Bawa’s resignation adds to the growing list of political movements in Taraba, with high-profile politicians, including the state lawmakers, pitching a tent in the ruling party.
