Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has visited Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, who is currently on death row after being convicted for blasphemy, at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.
Sowore disclosed the visit in a strongly worded post on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, where he alleged that the cleric’s conviction was the result of a politically engineered process under former Kano State governor and one-time APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
“Today, together with Barrister Hamza Nuhu Dantani, we drove to Kuje Prison to meet Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, who was sentenced to death in Kano on blasphemy charges, a politically motivated trial engineered under former Governor and now disgraced APC Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje,” Sowore wrote.
He described the entire judicial process that led to the cleric’s conviction as “pathetic, deeply compromised, and marred by betrayal,” alleging that even individuals close to Kabara “connived with political and clerical actors to ensure his conviction.”
According to him, the embattled cleric expressed strong faith, insisting he was protected by Allah and would uphold Islamic teachings “until the very end.”
“No human being deserves injustice, no matter how popular that injustice may appear when fueled by manipulative political or religious forces,” Sowore added.
He confirmed receiving the cleric’s Court of Appeal documents, which he said would be studied thoroughly. Beyond the legal process, Sowore emphasised the need for justice and cautioned against “the weaponisation of religion by corrupt politicians who fear knowledge, dialogue, and dissent.”
LEADERSHIP reports Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara was accused of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on July 17, 2021, leading to his arrest and prosecution by Kano State government. On December 15, 2022, the Upper Shari’a Court in Kano found him guilty and sentenced him to death by hanging.
The cleric is currently pursuing an appeal against the judgement.
