Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has extended his heartfelt condolences to the Agbese family over the passing of the veteran journalist, renowned author, and esteemed public intellectual, Mr. Dan Agbese, who died after a brief illness at the age of 81.
Mutfwang, in a condolence message issued by his director of press and public affairs, Mr. Gyang Bere, expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family, describing Mr Agbese as “a towering figure in Nigeria’s media landscape” whose incisive writing, uncommon wisdom, and mentorship shaped generations of journalists across the country.
He also noted that Agbese served as Editor of the Plateau State Government–owned newspaper, The Nigeria Standard, during its formative years, a role that further cemented his legacy as a pioneer in the development of modern journalism in Nigeria.
The Governor stated that the late Agbese lived a fulfilled and purposeful life, serving God and humanity. He added that although his departure was painful and challenging to comprehend, his remarkable contributions to national discourse would remain evergreen.
Governor Mutfwang prayed for God’s strength, comfort, and grace for the entire Agbese family “during this moment of grief, stressing that this is indeed a dark moment, but God remains your source of hope and consolation.”
On behalf of his family, the government and people of Plateau State, Governor Mutfwang extended his profound condolences to the Agbese family and the entire media community.
He urged them to take solace in the enduring legacy of Agbese, a man remembered for his humility, integrity, courage, and lifelong commitment to public service.
