Robomed Global, USA, in partnership with Nisa Medical Group, has launched Nigeria’s first Toumai Robotic Surgery Platform, marking a major leap forward in West Africa’s surgical innovation and healthcare capacity.

The groundbreaking installation, unveiled at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja, introduces advanced robotic-assisted procedures across multiple specialties, including urology, gynaecology, surgical oncology, bariatrics and general surgery.

The partners described the development as a transformative step toward enhancing surgical precision, improving patient outcomes and strengthening Nigeria’s medical expertise.

In a statement on Friday, Robomed global,Head of Media and Coporate Communication,Winifred Ebiye, said the project represents a new chapter in multi-specialty robotic surgery in Nigeria. She explained that RobomedGlobal, a U.S.-based organisation, deploys a multidisciplinary team of board-certified robotic surgeons and perioperative specialists to expand equitable surgical care internationally.

According to her, the partnership aims to build regional surgical capacity by training Nigerian and African surgeons in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted techniques, thereby reducing outbound medical travel and improving local clinical outcomes.

The collaboration also focuses on training surgeons, biomedical engineers and perioperative nurses; integrating theatre systems for greater safety and efficiency; and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Speaking on the milestone, Dr Obi Ekwenna, Chief Executive Officer of Robomed and a tenured Associate Professor of Urology and Transplantation in Ohio, described the launch as “real progress for healthcare in Nigeria.”

He said, “Introducing robotic surgery in Nigeria strengthens our system, expands local skill, and prepares the next generation of African surgeons to deliver high-quality care in pace with the rest of the world.”

Dr Iyore James, Chief Medical Officer of Robomed and a robotic surgery expert at Novant Health in Charlotte, USA, said the initiative reinforces their commitment to excellence and patient safety.

He noted that the mission includes training African healthcare professionals to world-class standards across various surgical subspecialties.

Robomed also announced plans to expand surgeon and biomedical engineering training through the Robomed Academy, a dedicated platform for skills development in robotic surgery.
