Prof Stephen Akinlabi Drives Manufacturing Through Science Innovation

Professor Stephen Akinlabi has earned recognition for his groundbreaking research at the intersection of advanced manufacturing and sustainable engineering.

An Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State University, he plays a pivotal role in the Adams State/CSU Mechanical Engineering Partnership Program, where he leads cutting-edge work in laser-based material processing, additive manufacturing, and sustainable production systems.

He has spent over a decade engineering solutions in the oil and gas industry, and his body of work—spanning over 450 peer-reviewed publications—has supported developments in smart manufacturing, material characterization, and industrial process optimization across multiple regions.

Among his notable contributions is the study titled “Experimental Study and Finite Element Analysis of Laser Beam-Formed Steel for Enhanced Structural Integrity,” which has been cited severally in laser forming and finite element modeling literature.

His study has established frameworks that advanced understanding of non-contact forming techniques for metals and has been referenced by research groups working on precision forming and structural control.

Dr. Akinlabi’s work was described as connecting laboratory research with industrial applications in laser beam forming and titanium alloy machining.

He also guiding students through materials and advanced manufacturing systems, from laser-based additive technologies to modern welding systems.

His research outputs have been applied by industrial partners including Responsive Engineering and NTG Group (UK), where process optimization frameworks informed aerospace machining of titanium alloys.

He work on bio-based lubricants and nanocoatings has informed curriculum development and testing approaches within academic–industry partnerships focused on environmentally conscious manufacturing. Whether it is laser welding or renewable energy systems, Dr. Akinlabi brings global experience and hands-on insight to every lab and lecture.

In a commentary, Engineering Africa Quarterly noted that “Dr. Akinlabi’s integration of machine learning with additive manufacturing is contributing to the broader shift toward data-driven, energy-efficient production systems.” His passion remains turning raw materials into smarter, stronger, more sustainable solutions while innovating and mentoring the next generation of engineers.

Dr. Akinlabi’s publications, including “Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing of Composite Laminates: Printability and Characterizations” (Applied Research, 2025), continue to receive international citations, reflecting the relevance of his research in the development of hybrid composites for aerospace and biomedical applications.
