Ebonyi State is reeling from a troubling wave of violent attacks, marked by the recent killing of a commissioner’s younger brother by suspected armed robbers barely days after a barber and a tricycle operator were murdered. The surge in cult-related clashes, armed robbery, and kidnappings has left communities tense and grieving, even as security agencies struggle to keep pace with criminals who appear to be growing bolder and more strategic. OBINNA OGBONNAYA writes .

In the past few months, residents of Oriuzor in Abakaliki local government area and several other communities in Ebonyi State have been living in fear, unable to sleep with both eyes closed. Dozens have been killed or abducted in a troubling surge of cult-related attacks, armed robbery incidents, and intra-communal conflicts. While some attribute the rising violence to the desperate quest for quick money, others point to growing unemployment and the battle for supremacy among rival cult groups as key drivers behind the relentless killings.

A few days ago, a suspected armed robbery gang stormed the densely populated Ishieke community in Ebonyi State, home to students of the Ishieke campus of Ebonyi State University and shot dead a middle-aged man, Mr. Christopher Igwe, popularly known as “Bombay.” He was the immediate younger brother of the State commissioner for local government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Uche A. Igwe, adding a painful.

Mr. Uchenna Igwe, who hails from Idembia Ishieke community in Ebonyi local government area, confirmed the killing of his younger brother in a grief-stricken voice, saying the tragedy has plunged the entire family of Patrick Igwe Egbarada, as well as the Idembia Ishieke community into deep mourning.

An eyewitness also recounted that the deceased, along with several siblings, was seated at the family compound around 8 p.m., preparing to attend a Christian wake in honour of a recently deceased relative when the attackers struck.

According to the eyewitness, a domestic gas dealer had rushed to the group to report that he had just been robbed by armed men who fled on two motorcycles. Moments later, the robbers, apparently having missed their escape route, circled back. The gas dealer raised an alarm to alert people nearby, and sensing danger, the armed robbers opened fire indiscriminately as they sped off. Both the deceased and the gas dealer were hit by bullets in sensitive parts of their bodies and Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki. Doctors later confirmed the commissioner’s younger brother dead, while the gas dealer is still undergoing treatment for his injuries.

Security agencies in Ebonyi State have identified several major flashpoints for armed robbery attacks, cult-related killings, and communal clashes. These hotspots include Oriuzor in Ezza North LGA, Afikpo in Afikpo North LGA, Nkalaha in Ishielu LGA, Amaziri and Akpoha, also in Afikpo, and Oso Edda in Edda local government area. According to authorities, these locations have recorded some of the most disturbing incidents in recent months, making them priority areas in ongoing security operations.

In a brief post, the commissioner wrote: “My immediate younger brother was killed by armed robbers around 8:30 p.m. tonight. The Igwe Egbarada family is in grief. We need your prayers.” At the Igwe Egbarada home in Ishieke, clusters of sympathisers could be seen discussing the tragedy, their faces marked by grief, sorrow, and uncontrollable tears. A family source who spoke to LEADERSHIP Weekend revealed that the police have already commenced investigations into the killing.

The spike in violence has plunged many families into sudden mourning, their lives upended by losses they neither expected nor were prepared for. From urban centres to rural communities, the fear is palpable,  residents speak in whispers, lock their doors earlier, and navigate daily life with caution. Each new attack deepens the anxiety, turning ordinary routines into risky ventures.

Security operatives say they are intensifying efforts to track and apprehend the perpetrators, but the criminal networks seem to evolve with each crackdown, exploiting loopholes and testing the limits of law enforcement. Meanwhile, the state government continues to roll out measures aimed at restoring peace, though many citizens still feel caught between hope and despair as they wait for meaningful relief.

The family issued the report to set the record straight amid widespread speculation on social media about the killing. We are in mourning, and I don’t understand why people would spread false claims, a family source said. “We decided to clarify what actually happened, and we believe the police will soon release the results of their investigation.

The killing of the state commissioner’s younger brother, highlighting the rising insecurity in Ebonyi State comes just weeks after police confirmed the murder of two young men in Oriuzor community, Ezza North local government area, in a suspected cult-related clash allegedly carried out by members of a rival group.

The Police public relations officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, identified the victims as Ogele Ifeanyi, a barber who was killed at his shop, and Nweke Obumneme Emmanuel, a Keke rider. According to the PPRO, the incident occurred on  November  1, 2025 around 10 p.m., and the command is currently investigating the case.

A source who spoke to LEADERSHIP Weekend revealed that the assailants, believed to be members of a rival cult group, stormed the area and fatally attacked two men identified as Ifeanyi and Emmanuel. According to the source, Ifeanyi, a barber, was the primary target. The assailants had allegedly been trailing him for some time, reportedly in connection with the killing of a leader of their rival cult group, a claim that may have triggered the deadly reprisal.

The killing of the second victim, Emmanuel, described by locals as a tricycle operator and not a cultist , sparked outrage and protests in Oriuzor community. Hundreds of youths took to the streets, chanting and carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Enough of Cult War in Our Community,” “We Demand Justice for Emmanuel,” “Emmanuel Is Not a Cultist, Why Kill Him,” “Police, Bring to Justice Those Instigating Cult Activities,” and “Say No to Cultism,” among others. The demonstrations reflected the community’s anger and grief over the escalating violence.

In an interview, one of the protesters, who identified himself as Victor and claimed to be a relative of the deceased, said Emmanuel was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. He had stopped by the barbershop to get a haircut when the attackers struck, making him an unintended victim of the violent attack.

Today, Oriuzor community has become a shadow of its former self. Residents rarely step outside after 7 p.m., and most relaxation centers close early, gripped by fear of the unknown. Cult violence has been on the rise, yet many feel that both the state government and security agencies have done little to curb the menace, leaving the community in a state of constant apprehension.

It is recalled that a few months ago, the Ebonyi State policecCommand confirmed the deaths of three men following a cult clash in Oriuzor community, Ezza North local government area, before the recent wave of violence.

The state police public relations officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, said gunshots were reported as cult members clashed in the area, resulting in the deaths of three people. “Two persons have been arrested in connection with the clash, and the situation has been brought under control. Our team has been closely monitoring the matter, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain the root causes of the shootings. Preliminary findings indicate the incident stemmed from a clash between rival cult groups,” the PPRO said. “We immediately deployed personnel to the community, and normalcy has since returned..

Also early this year,  one Ekuma Henry Emeka, an IT student of Unwana Polytechnic in the department of Accountancy and former Mr. SWAG of Polyunwana, was shot dead at night in Ngodo, Afikpo, over an alleged cult-related matter at the newly opened Victoria Garden City.

The Nkalaha-Ehamufu axis of Ishielu local Government Area  which is a boundary community of Ebonyi and Enugu State and and some other parts of Ishielu communities in the state has been a terrible spot and safe heaven for criminals as there has been several robbery attacks, headers/farmers attack among others. Unfortunately, in recent months, the axis have become an easy access and route for passengers travelling from Cross River State and Ebonyi State to the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Abuja. Most motorist from travelling to Abuja from Ebonyi State now ply Nkalaha-Ehamufu road which is a shorter drive to Abuja.

The recent spate of armed robbery attacks along lonely roads has instilled fear among motorists and passengers. Just a few days ago, men of the Ebonyi State Police Command shot dead a suspected armed robber while he attempted to snatch a motorcycle belonging to Ali Solomon along the Ehamufu–Nkalagu Road in Ishielu Local Government Area. SP Joshua Ukandu said that on 12 November 2025, operatives on patrol along the road heard sporadic gunshots and distress calls.

They quickly moved to the scene and found Ali Solomon struggling with three armed robbers trying to dispossess him of his motorcycle. “Upon sighting the police, the hoodlums opened fire and fled. The operatives returned fire, killing one suspect and recovering an AK-47 rifle loaded with ten rounds of ammunition,” SP Ukandu said.

Shortly before the killing of the armed robber on the Ehamufu, Nkalagu Road, gunmen had killed two people in Agba community, Ishielu local government area, sparking renewed fear and anxiety among residents. The town union president, Sunday Chukwu Nwadibia, confirmed the killings and identified the victims as Sunday Oyibe, a school proprietor and chairman of the local timber association, and Chukwu Ebuka.

In previous attacks, they snatched a Toyota Corolla and five motorcycles from residents . I was in my office when people started running, shouting that armed robbers had reached our junction. Everyone scrambled for safety. I locked my office as I watched the chaos unfold. The attackers then moved to another junction near my house, Orie Agba, and began firing sporadically.” Nwadibia recounted.

They shot Sunday Oyibe, founder of Unique International School and chairman of the timber association. We rushed him to the hospital, but he didn’t survive,” a source recounted. “They also shot Chukwu Ebuka, who witnesses said was struggling to protect his iPhone. I recall a similar attack in January 2024, when gunmen riddled my home with bullets but spared my family. Just two months ago, the gang robbed a POS operator of N2.7 million, and last month, they kidnapped a man from our community market.

These attackers always mask their faces and wear security uniforms with bulletproof vests. Since they started, our people no longer move freely at night. Businesses have crumbled, and once it’s dark, the entire community goes silent,” he lamented

In a chat with LEADERSHIP Weekend, Police public relations officer SP Joshua Ukandu said the command is not overstretched by the activities of hoodlums, noting that most cases are isolated incidents. “Our men are always battle-ready to curb the activities of criminals,” he added.

Ebonyi remains one of the safest states in the South East, with very low cases of robbery and other criminal activities. Our officers patrol around the clock to ensure the security of lives and property, and we have recorded several significant breakthroughs in our ongoing fight against criminal elements operating in the state,” SP Ukandu said.

Security is everyone’s business, we can’t do it alone, that why our commissioner of Police, CP Adaku Uche Anya has always urged residents of the State to avail the command useful information that will ensure the apprehension of criminal elements in the State.

When contacted, the senior special assistant to the state governor on Internal Security for Ivo local government area, Mr. Cletus Ike Ngah, and the dpecial adviser to the governor on security for the Capital City, Mr. Panchris Ikechukwu, explained that upon assuming office, Governor Francis Nwifuru appointed 13 security aides one for each of the 13 local government areas along with four additional aides overseeing the three senatorial zones and one for the state capital

They noted that aides working closely with the State Security outfit, the Ebonyi State Neighborhood Security Watch, have helped achieve a significant reduction in criminal activities across the state. The administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru remains committed to safeguarding lives and property. “Almost every week, we raid criminal hideouts, make arrests, and hand suspects over to the police. Some of the incidents you see reported are isolated cases, but we have warned criminal elements to leave the state, as it can never be a safe haven for them,” the source said.
