Over 10 Nigerians On Death Row In Saudi Arabia, Says Envoy

Nigerian Chargé d’Affaires in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Ambassador Ibrahim Modibbo, has disclosed that more than 10 Nigerians are currently awaiting execution in Saudi Arabia for drug-related offences.

He disclosed this while addressing Team Nigeria’s athletes and officials at the conclusion of the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh yesterday.

The envoy, who did not reveal the identities of the affected Nigerians, stated that the individuals had smuggled drugs into the Kingdom, which is strictly against the country’s laws.

He further said the Nigerian embassy in Saudi Arabia was working to explore the possibility of clemency or leniency for some of those on death row. He urged Nigerians both at home and abroad to refrain from travelling to Saudi Arabia, or anywhere else, for illicit purposes.

He said, “More than 10 Nigerians are awaiting execution as we speak because they brought drugs into the Kingdom, including cocaine and heroin. The laws of the Kingdom are very strict. While we are trying to see if some of these individuals can receive clemency or leniency, we advise people not to come here for the wrong reasons and to abide by the laws of the host country. Every nation has its laws, and this country functions well because there is law and order, and the law is enforced.

“Nigerians should not come here for illicit activities, whether drugs or any other wrongdoing. We should only come for positive reasons.

“Saudi Arabia is developing beyond oil; it is opening up various sectors and expanding its economy. We have many talented Nigerians. If you have skills in engineering or information technology, this is the future. If you possess any type of skill or are involved in sports, the kingdom aims to become a regional hub for innovation, creativity and economic growth. There are significant opportunities available.

“Additionally, Saudi Arabia, particularly Riyadh, has been hosting numerous annual conferences promoting mining and international defence investments. There are ample opportunities for young people here, but they should not be for those with ill intentions.”

He commended Team Nigeria athletes for their outstanding performance at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, noting that finishing 8th overall with 11 gold, 12 silver and 7 bronze medals is an impressive achievement.

“The performance of our athletes was excellent, particularly considering that out of 57 countries, we ranked 8th by securing 11 gold medals, 12 silver, and 7 bronze. This is a significant accomplishment, especially against such strong competition. For our team to have competed and achieved this, we are incredibly proud of them,” he said.
