Nnamdi Kanu: Tinubu Urged To Intervene, Issue Pardon

Prominent businessman and deputy gubernatorial candidate of the YPP in the last gubernatorial election in Abia State, a public affairs advocate, Dr. Chima Desmond Anyaso, has called on President Bola Tinubu to invoke his constitutional executive powers and grant a presidential pardon to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, following Thursday’s verdict.

He is one of many prominent Igbo leaders who have made similar statements.

Dr. Anyaso made the call in a statement issued from his country home in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, over the weekend, emphasizing that the moment is right for a decisive political solution.

He explained that he had deliberately refrained from public commentary on the issue in the past so as not to interfere with, or appear to influence, a matter that was actively before the courts. However, with the judiciary having now delivered its verdict even though it remains subject to appeal he said it is timely and appropriate for the President to intervene in the interest of national unity.

“Now that the courts have spoken and the judicial process has advanced to a point where executive discretion may be applied, I respectfully call on President Tinubu to grant a presidential pardon to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Dr. Anyaso said.

“This is the time for the President to demonstrate magnanimity, heal divisions, and unite our nation behind a common purpose.”

Dr. Anyaso also noted that a wide spectrum of Nigerians—traditional rulers, political leaders, business groups, civil society organizations, religious institutions, and ordinary citizens—have repeatedly appealed for a political resolution. According to him, granting a pardon at this time would help reduce tension, promote reconciliation, and reinforce the country’s commitment to peace.

“Nigeria stands at a defining moment,” Anyaso added.

“We need unity, healing, and a renewed sense of collective responsibility. A presidential pardon for Nnamdi Kanu would send a strong signal that this administration is committed to peace, justice, and the future of our nation.”

Dr. Anyaso further urged all concerned groups and individuals to embrace dialogue, national cohesion, and constructive engagement, rather than division or confrontation.
