The National Executive Council of the Labour Party, has reaffirmed the national Leaders elected at its March 27, 2024 Convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State.

This followed the recent Supreme Court pronouncements stating that party leadership matters were internal affairs and not subject to judicial intervention.

At a joint briefing attended by representatives of INEC, national chairman, Comrade Julius Abure and national secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, announced the resolutions reached at the NEC meeting in Abuja yesterday.

According to them, NEC reviewed the controversies and litigations that trailed the 2024 convention and concluded that all officers elected in Nnewi including the national chairman, his deputies, zonal vice chairmen, the national secretary and other principal officials remained validly in office.

NEC also filled three vacant positions in the National Working Committee which includes Oluwafemi Abayomi Arabambi as National Vice Chairman (South West), Prince Favour Reuben as Assistant National Organizing Secretary and Enu Kikawa as Assistant National Woman Leader (South South).

“NEC authorized the National Chairman and National Secretary to convene a Special Convention when necessary. approved the conduct of ward, local government, and state congresses across the federation.” They said

Also the former Vice-Presidential Candidate of the party, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed reaffirmed that Peter Obi remains a member of the Labour Party and noted that the party had continued to grow despite internal challenges.

He added that INEC’s presence at the meeting underscores the party’s commitment to due process. Hence calling  for reconciliation within the party and urged members to unite ahead of the 2027 general election.

He attributed Nigeria’s worsening insecurity—including school abductions and attacks on military officers to what he described as a diverted electoral mandate, insisting such incidents would not have occurred under a Labour Party government.
