With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) just weeks away, Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has issued a rallying cry, declaring that nothing short of victory in Morocco will suffice for the Nigerian national team. Having reached the final of the previous tournament, Iwobi believes the squad possesses the talent and determination to go one step further and lift the coveted trophy.

The prestigious continental showpiece is scheduled to kick off on December 21st, concluding on January 18th in various Moroccan cities. The memory of the 2023 AFCON final, where Nigeria narrowly lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in a gripping encounter, still burns brightly for the Super Eagles. However, rather than dwelling on past disappointments, Iwobi and his teammates are channelling that experience into a renewed resolve for the upcoming competition.

Speaking to the AySuga Channel, the Fulham star articulated the team’s unwavering ambition: “We were really close last AFCON, but the only way we can improve on the last AFCON is to win it.” He added with conviction, “We have the players to do it, we believe we can, we just have to prove it.” This sentiment reflects a growing confidence within the Super Eagles camp, fuelled by a blend of experienced professionals and exciting young talent.

Nigeria, three-time champions of the AFCON, have been drawn in Group C for the 2025 edition. Their campaign will commence on December 23rd with an opening fixture against Tanzania. This will be followed by a challenging encounter with former champions Tunisia on December 27th, before they conclude their group stage matches against Uganda on December 30th. Each of these fixtures will be crucial in building momentum and securing a strong position for the knockout stages.

The pressure on the Super Eagles to perform well in Morocco is particularly acute following their failure to qualify for the expanded FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. The disappointment of missing out on the global spectacle has left Nigerian fans yearning for success, and the 2025 AFCON presents a golden opportunity for the team to redeem themselves and bring joy to their passionate supporters both at home and across the globe. With Iwobi’s defiant words echoing through the squad, the Super Eagles appear primed to launch a formidable challenge for AFCON glory.
