We Will Strengthen Democracy With Oversight – Barau

Deputy Senate president, Senator  Barau Jibrin, has assured Nigerians that the legislative arms of government would continue to ensure effective oversight to strengthen democracy and good governance in the country.

Jibrin gave the assurance when he delivered  a distinguished personality lecture, in his honour with the theme, “The Role of Legislature In Consolidating Democratic Governance In Nigeria” organised by the Department of Political Science, University of Ilorin.

He maintained that the  legislative arms of the government have the opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of their constituencies through purposeful representation.

He explained that the lawmakers would ensure checks and balances through the execution of their legislative duties and oversights.

This, he said lawmakers would do to promote transparency and enhance integrity as well as strengthen citizens participation in the democratic governance in the country.

He said a strong, independent and accountable legislature is the requirement and the fulcrum of every democratic governance.

Earlier, the vice chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), had  urged the students and other guests at the lecture to ensure they apply what was learnt to enhance the  growth and development of the country.
