Lafarge Africa Plc has completed the rehabilitation of the historic Independence Memorial Obelisk at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and cultural preservation.
The project involved structural reinforcement, aesthetic improvements, accessibility upgrades, and restoration of original carvings and inscriptions, while maintaining the monument’s historic integrity.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the group managing Director/CEO of Lafarge Africa, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, said the restoration reflects the company’s dedication to Nigeria’s infrastructure renewal using sustainable building practices. He noted that the project utilised Ecoplanet Elephant, Lafarge’s eco-friendly cement solution that reduces carbon emissions by at least 30 per cent.
Alade-Akinyemi described the Obelisk as a national symbol that must be protected for future generations, stressing that preserving the monument is an investment in “identity, memory, and national pride.”
The minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, commended Lafarge Africa for safeguarding a culturally significant landmark. She said the restoration aligns with Nigeria’s focus on connecting history with innovation and sustainable development.
In a message delivered on his behalf by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts & Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised the initiative, describing the Obelisk as a symbol of unity, progress, and national hope. He said the project enhances cultural preservation and promotes tourism.
The managing director of Tafawa Balewa Square, Lucia Shittu, highlighted the monument’s enduring relevance, noting its significance as the site where the Union Jack was lowered at Nigeria’s independence.
The event was attended by key government officials, lawmakers, business leaders and representatives of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
