The Abia State Government, in partnership with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), has commenced the construction of a 7.5MVA, 33/11kV Injection Substation in Umuahia, the state capital, to boost electricity supply.
In a statement issued on Monday, December 8, the NDPHC said the project was designed to strengthen power distribution infrastructure and enhance energy reliability across the state.
Performing the groundbreaking, Governor Alex Otti described the initiative as a pivotal step toward modernising Abia’s power network. He noted that the new substation signalled a broader state-wide effort to expand and upgrade power infrastructure.
Executed under the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP), the project scope includes a 1km 33kV line, 1.2km 11kV line, two 300kVA distribution substations, and a 2km low-tension line.
Governor Otti commended the Federal Government and NDPHC for prioritising Abia State in the latest power sector intervention and lauded President Bola Tinubu’s Electricity Act 2023 for opening the sector to increased state involvement and private investment.
He disclosed that the 2026 budget makes provision for another 7.5MVA Injection Substation, which will bring the Ogurube Layout capacity to 15MVA upon completion.
NDPHC Managing Director/CEO, Jennifer Adighije, represented by Executive Director, Networks, Bello Babayo Bello, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering sustainable electricity nationwide, stressing that the Umuahia project aligned with its mandate to empower communities and spur economic growth.
Stakeholders said the collaboration between the Federal Government, NDPHC, and Abia State underscored the value of strategic partnerships in delivering critical infrastructure.
Upon completion, the substation is expected to strengthen power supply, support SMEs, enhance industrial activity, and improve the living standards of residents in Umuahia and neighbouring communities.
