Gunmen suspected to be bandits have launched an attack on Kururawa community in Lakwaya district of Gwarzo local government area of Kano State, abducting an elderly farmer and injuring his son.

A credible source from the area told newsmen on condition of anonymity that the assailants, who rode on two motorcycles and heavily armed, infiltrated the community from the neighbouring Katsina State on Sunday night.

According to the source, the bandits invaded a private residence in Kururawa and abducted Alhaji Yakubu Na Tsohuwa, an elderly farmer, after overpowering members of his household. His eldest son, Badamasi, was shot in the leg while attempting to stop the attackers from taking his father away.

The source explained that Lakwaya district of Kano State shares borders with Malumfashi and Musawa local government areas of Katsina State, making the area vulnerable to cross-border attacks.

“Kururawa village is about one kilometre from Lakwaya town. The bandits came at night, stormed the house and took away Alhaji Yakubu. His son was shot while trying to resist them and has been taken to hospital for treatment,” the source said.

He appealed to the Kano State Government to urgently establish a security camp in the area to prevent further attacks and reassure residents.

Although residents described the incident as the first major attack in the area in a long time, it has, however, thrown the once-peaceful community into fear and uncertainty.

As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Police Command was yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Efforts to reach the police spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, were unsuccessful as he wasn’t responding to calls placed to his known phone line.
