FG Intensifies Nationwide Awareness Ahead Of Tax Reform Implementation

With the January 2026 rollout date for Nigeria’s new tax laws fast approaching, the Federal Government has intensified a nationwide public awareness campaign designed to educate citizens and businesses on the objectives, benefits, and practical implications of the reforms.

The Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, led by Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, is at the centre of this national effort, driving what has become one of the largest tax education campaigns in the country’s recent history.

Through a mix of digital engagement, professional training and grassroots communication, the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee is pushing to ensure the reforms are clearly explained long before implementation begins.

The campaign stems from the administration’s recognition that tax reform is only effective when the public clearly understands what is changing, why those changes are necessary, and how they will impact daily life. Against this backdrop, the government is adopting a wide-reaching approach that involves social media influencers, professionals, civil society groups, grassroots networks, and government agencies.

One of the most innovative components of the awareness strategy is the Committee’s special training programme for digital content creators. Following the first round of applications, which attracted tremendous interest from young Nigerians, the Committee expanded the programme to accommodate more participants. The initiative targets creators across platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, and LinkedIn, with a minimum combined followership requirement of 10,000.

Under the expanded plan, 30 additional creators who meet the criteria will join the 20 earlier shortlisted, bringing the total number of participants to 50. They will undergo intensive training sessions designed to familiarise them with the new tax laws, the goals behind the reforms, and the expected impact on individuals and businesses. After the training, all participants will be granted direct access to the Committee’s leadership, including the chairman, for clarifications before publishing tax-related educational content.

Officials say this direct engagement is intended to ensure accuracy, prevent misinformation, and build public trust at a time when online communication plays an increasingly influential role in shaping public opinion. The Committee will publish an updated list of selected creators after the training.

In addition to the digital outreach, the government is also focusing on strengthening the capacity of tax professionals across the country. The Committee recently concluded applications for its Train-the-Trainer programme, which received 11,137 entries within just two weeks—far exceeding its initial target of 3,000 participants. The overwhelming response prompted the Committee to broaden the structure of the training, which will now be delivered in three modules. These cover the foundations and objectives of the tax reforms, a detailed analysis of the changes and compliance requirements, and practical case studies to guide application.

Participants may choose to attend one or all the modules depending on their needs. Training sessions will begin on 16 December 2025, with invitations and further information sent to applicants through the official programme email address. According to the Committee, the aim is to ensure that every professional who plays a role in interpreting or implementing the new laws is adequately equipped for the transition.

Beyond the formal training, the government is also deepening grassroots engagement. Earlier in the year, the Presidential Committee held strategic discussions with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to strengthen nationwide public education efforts. With offices in all 774 local government areas, the NOA is expected to play a crucial role in communicating the reforms to market associations, community leaders, rural dwellers, small business operators, and other groups that rely heavily on offline information channels.

Chairman of the Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, said the objective is to ensure that every Nigerian—from artisans and traders to professionals and business owners—understands how the reforms work and how they stand to benefit. He noted that the government is committed to a fair, transparent, and inclusive approach that prioritises public clarity before enforcement begins in 2026.

The national awareness drive is particularly important because of the scale and ambition of the reforms. For decades, Nigeria’s tax system has suffered from complexity, overlapping taxes, poor compliance, and limited communication of policy intent. These issues have contributed to Nigeria’s low revenue-to-GDP ratio and created significant challenges for businesses operating in the country.

The current reform aims to fix long-standing structural problems by simplifying tax administration, eliminating multiple taxation, improving transparency, and creating a system that is fairer, more efficient, and supportive of economic growth. While the reforms will broaden the tax net, government officials insist that the measures are designed to protect vulnerable citizens and small businesses from undue financial pressure.

Experts say the Federal Government’s proactive communication efforts could significantly improve public acceptance of the reforms. By reaching out early through digital platforms, traditional media, professional networks, and community institutions, authorities hope to break the pattern of confusion and resistance that often surrounds new fiscal policies in Nigeria.

The Committee believes that achieving widespread understanding is not just essential for compliance, but also for restoring public confidence in the tax system. By giving ordinary Nigerians access to simplified explanations, clarifications, and opportunities to ask questions, the government hopes to encourage voluntary compliance and foster a culture where taxes are seen as a shared responsibility rather than a burden imposed without consultation.

As January 2026 draws near, the Federal Government is expected to continue expanding its outreach efforts, with more training sessions, public engagements, explanatory materials, and media collaborations planned in the coming months. For now, officials say the priority is ensuring that every citizen has access to accurate information and the opportunity to understand how the reforms will shape Nigeria’s economic future.

With digital creators amplifying messages online, professionals preparing for technical implementation, and the NOA supporting community-level communication, Nigeria is embarking on a new phase of fiscal reform—one marked by transparency, openness, and strong public engagement. The coming year will test the effectiveness of these education efforts, but early indicators suggest that Nigerians are ready to participate, learn, and contribute to building a clearer, fairer, and more efficient tax system for the country.
