Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Yusuf, has joined Nigerians within and outside the country in celebrating elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, as he clocks 100, describing him as one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s political history and a pride of Kano State.

In a statement issued yesterday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the governor said the life of the centenarian, which spans the pre-independence era to contemporary Nigeria, remains a testimony to courage, consistency and unwavering commitment to democratic values.

Governor Yusuf noted that Yakasai played a prominent role in the evolution of Northern Nigerian politics, particularly through his involvement with the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU), where he championed the cause of the talakawa and stood firmly for social justice and inclusive governance.

He said the elder statesman’s decades of political activism and public service have earned him an enduring place in the nation’s history, describing him as one of the last surviving architects of Nigeria’s formative political journey.

According to the governor, the milestone of 100 years presents not only a moment of joy for the Yakasai family but also an opportunity for Kano State and the country at large to reflect on the ideals of unity, patriotism and principled leadership which the centenarian represents.
