A renowned Katsina philanthropist, Alhaji Dahiru Mangal, has financed medical treatment worth more than N257 million for no fewer than 21,000 vulnerable patients across Katsina State since 2016, reaffirming his position as one of the state’s foremost humanitarian contributors.
The intervention, channelled through the Mangal Foundation, was highlighted at the weekend during a screening exercise for patients with eye conditions in Katsina.
A member of the foundation’s Board of Trustees, Alhaji Hassan Kabir, provided an overview of the organisation’s impact over the years, describing the support as a life-changing relief for many poor families.
Kabir disclosed that the foundation had spent over N140 million on treatment for more than 3,000 urology patients, addressing conditions that many sufferers could not otherwise afford to treat.
He added that over 17,000 patients received medical attention for various eye-related problems, with the foundation covering medical bills totalling more than N30 million.
He further explained that the foundation also funded care for over 1,000 hernia and hydrocele patients, committing not less than N87 million to surgeries, post-operative care, and medications.
According to Kabir, the foundation’s intervention is structured to ensure that beneficiaries receive full medical support.
“Patients with minor ailments are examined, treated, given free medication, and discharged. Those requiring surgery have their procedures fully funded by the foundation, including all associated expenses until discharge. The foundation has engaged some of the best medical teams and procured high-quality drugs and equipment for these interventions”, he said.
Kabir reaffirmed that since its establishment in 2016, the Mangal Foundation has remained committed to assisting vulnerable groups through healthcare, education, and economic empowerment.
He noted that thousands of patients from neighbouring states and even parts of Niger Republic have benefited from its sponsored surgical procedures.
“We aim to ease the financial burden of healthcare for vulnerable individuals who struggle to meet basic needs,” he added.
At the Katsina Eye Centre, ophthalmic nurse Malam Ibrahim Lawal-Rabo applauded the initiative, calling it a crucial intervention at a time when many Nigerians face rising medical costs and limited access to quality healthcare.
He said such philanthropic efforts support government efforts and help reduce healthcare disparities in underserved communities.
Several beneficiaries who spoke during the screening described the foundation’s support as a blessing and urged government agencies, corporate organisations, and wealthy individuals to emulate Alhaji Mangal’s humanitarian example.
