Eight students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have died in an auto crash that occurred in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

Reports said that the students were returning from an occasion when the accident occurred.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday around 2 am.

The Public Education Officer, Plateau Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), SRC Peter Longsan, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to newsmen in Jos on Thursday.

Longsan said the Plateau State Sector Command received a distress call at about 2:30 am, reporting a road traffic crash that occurred opposite Unity Bank on Zaria Road in Jos.

According to him, the crash involved a trailer and a bus with eleven people on board the bus who were said to be students of the University of Jos.

“On arrival, seven people were suspected to be dead on the spot, as they were eventually certified to be dead by the doctor. Another victim died in the hospital bringing the total number of the deceased to eight,” Longsan said.

He however explained that, “Three others are currently receiving treatment at the hospital” while disclosing that, “All victims were males.”

He added that an eyewitness testified that the bus was on a high speed and engaged in wrongful overtaking, which led to loss of control and the eventual crash.

The Sector Commander, FRSC Plateau Command, Corps Commander Olajide Mogaji, has called on the motoring public, most especially drivers, to desist from night trips, avoid excessive speed and dangerous driving under the influence of fatigue.

Mogaji noted that these are the major causes of fatalities when crashes occur.
