FBI Warns US Government Employees Against China’s ‘Fake Job Offers’

The United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a new security alert warning current and former US government employees about a growing tactic allegedly used by China’s intelligence services to obtain sensitive information through fraudulent online job offers.

In a public advisory in Atlanta, the FBI accused the Chinese operatives of posing as recruiters on professional networking and hiring platforms, presenting enticing job opportunities to individuals with government experience.

The aim, the agency warned, is to extract sensitive or classified US government information under the guise of legitimate employment discussions.

“China’s intelligence services are using fake job offers to target current and former U.S. government employees. Don’t take the bait,” the FBI said.

“Don’t put our future at risk. If you get a suspicious request for information, report it to the FBI.”

According to the Bureau, these fake recruiters often design offers that appear unusually attractive, featuring high salaries and flexible working hours.

It said the red flags include excessive flattery, requests for favours such as assistance with visas, or offers to cover travel and accommodation costs.

The FBI also highlighted suspicious signs such as the use of personal email addresses or encrypted messaging apps, and lack of a verifiable professional online presence.

“The reality is, if a job sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” the agency said, urging government-affiliated professionals to trust their instincts and promptly report any suspicious recruitment attempts.

The warning came amid heightened concerns over cyber-espionage and intelligence-gathering operations targeting U.S. institutions, particularly on digital platforms where personal and professional information is easily accessible.
