The World Sustainable Development Goals Organisation has renewed calls for a stronger national cohesion through youth inclusion and sustainable leadership. It warned that Nigeria’s development would remain unattainable without unity.
At a dinner in Abuja yesterday, the African Continental Governor of WSDGO and host, Alhaji Yahya Muhammad Guregi, described unity as the bedrock of national progress.
He said no meaningful development could be achieved in an atmosphere of division, urging Nigerians to embrace tolerance, collaboration and shared responsibility.
“Development will become a mirage if there is no unity,” Guregi said.
A representative of the director-general of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mrs Oyem Ngozi Blessing, said unity and sustainable development were inseparable.
She called on Nigerian youths to support government policies aimed at promoting stability, peace and economic growth.
“National unity enhances sustainable development. We urge the youths to continue to support policy implementation for the good of the country,” she said.
Also, Sheikh Nuru Khalid, a member of the WSDGO Religious Board in Nigeria and conference coordinator, said religious leaders have a crucial role to play in fostering unity among young people.
He identified education as a key driver of national advancement and urged youths to see unity as both a personal duty and a collective responsibility.
A representative of the Yobe State governor and commissioner for Religious Affairs, Hon. Yusuf Umar, who was the special guest of honour, commended WSDGO for promoting unity at a sensitive period in the country’s history.
According to him, national unity must be embraced collectively to guarantee peace and prosperity.
The president of the Nigerian Youth Congress, Jethro Annum, urged national leaders to deliberately create space for young people within governance structures.
He described youth inclusion as essential for sustainable national transformation and called on policymakers to open leadership opportunities to youths.
