Kogi Health Insurance Targets 500,000 Enrollees By 2026

The executive secretary of Kogi State Health Insurance Agency (KGSHIA), Dr. Adekunle Aledare, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to improving healthcare service delivery and expanding insurance coverage across the state.

Dr. Aledare made this known on Monday when he defended the agency’s 2026 budget before the Kogi State House of Assembly committee on appropriation.

According to him, KGSHIA has put in place a robust quality assurance system to ensure that enrollees receive value for money and quality healthcare services.
He noted that the agency has a quality assurance control unit that conducts daily monitoring visits to accredited healthcare facilities to assess the standard of care provided to beneficiaries.

He also noted that the agency has deployed desk officers across the state, with at least one officer assigned to each local government and stationed in general hospitals.

He explained that the officers are responsible for monitoring service delivery at the grassroots and ensuring compliance with the agency’s standards.

While noting that plans are underway in 2026 to increase the number of desk officers to further reduce cases of post-hospitalization challenges faced by enrollees, the executive secretary highlighted the agency’s 24-hour customer care unit as one of its key strengths.

He urged enrollees to utilise the customer care number printed at the back of their identity cards to report any denial of services, poor-quality care, or unavailability of covered drugs while still at the healthcare facility.

“We cannot be everywhere at the same time, but we have staff on duty round the clock. Even at 3 a.m., someone is available to take calls and promptly engage the hospital to resolve complaints,” he said.

On coverage, he noted that the agency currently provides health insurance to over 269,000 residents of Kogi State, with a target of enrolling 500,000 people by 2026.

To achieve this, he said the agency plans to intensify its outreach through increased media visibility, town hall meetings, and community engagement with traditional, religious, and youth leaders across all local governments.
