Avon Medical Practice has expanded its critical-care capacity with the commissioning of a fully enhanced Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at its Lagos facility.
The N200 million ICU, housed within the hospital’s recently completed building extension, is designed to manage high-acuity cases requiring advanced monitoring and specialised medical intervention. The development is aimed at strengthening access to world-class critical care within Nigeria and reducing the need for overseas medical treatment.
The unit operates round-the-clock and is staffed by a dedicated team comprising three intensive-care physicians, three critical-care nurses working in rotation, three nursing assistants and on-call specialists, under the leadership of a Consultant Intensivist. It is equipped to manage conditions including severe respiratory failure, post-operative complications, sepsis, cardiac emergencies and multi-organ dysfunction.
Equipment installed in the upgraded ICU includes multi-mode mechanical ventilators, continuous vital-signs monitors, multiple infusion pumps and syringe drivers, a defibrillator, ECG machine, blood warmer, specialist ICU beds with pressure-relieving air mattresses, medical-grade air-filtration systems and patient-transport equipment.
Speaking at the commissioning, Chief Executive Officer of Avon Medical Practice, Dr Akinbiyi Oke, said the new ICU reflects the organisation’s commitment to strengthening specialised healthcare delivery and improving emergency response capacity. He noted that the investment positions the hospital to manage complex medical cases more effectively.
Also speaking, the head of clinical services, Dr Olubunmi Salako, said the ICU team had undergone extensive training in advanced life-support and critical-care protocols, adding that the facility would deliver evidence-based care aligned with international best practices.
The ICU is accessible 24 hours a day through the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department and serves both private-paying and insured patients.
Avon Medical Practice is a 50-bed multi-speciality healthcare provider with facilities that include a full-service hospital, clinics, a dialysis centre, pharmacy and laboratory services. The organisation says it remains committed to providing affordable, world-class healthcare services in Nigeria.
