In a hard-fought encounter at the Africa Cup of Nations, the Democratic Republic of Congo narrowly defeated Benin 1-0, securing a vital three points in their quest for tournament glory.

The match showcased both teams’ determination and tactical prowess, but it was Théo Bongonda’s early goal that ultimately made the difference.

The scoring opened in the 16th minute when Bongonda capitalised on a well-placed assist from Arthur Masuaku, sending a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the net.

This goal set the tone for a tense first half, where both sides struggled to find their rhythm, with numerous missed opportunities.

As the match progressed, Benin began to apply pressure. Although Aiyegun Tosin had a crucial chance in the dying moments of the first half, however, his right-footed shot was saved in the centre of the goal by Congo DR’s Lionel Mpasi.

The first half ended with Congo leading 1-0, as Benin searched for an equaliser.

The second half saw Benin ramping up their efforts, with multiple attempts to breach the Congo defence.

Notably, Rachid Moumini and Tamimou Ouorou both had shots that missed the target, reflecting Benin’s mounting frustration. Congo’s defence, marshalled by Chancel Mbemba and Axel Tuanzebe, held firm under pressure.

Despite a flurry of substitutions and a total of ten minutes added time, Benin couldn’t find the back of the net. The match was marred by several stoppages due to injuries and fouls, with both teams receiving multiple yellow cards as tensions rose on the pitch.

In the closing stages, Congo DR’s goalkeeper Mpasi made a series of crucial saves, including a late effort from Tosin that could have levelled the score.

Ultimately, the final whistle confirmed Congo DR’s hard-earned victory, allowing them to celebrate a crucial win in their AFCON campaign.
