As Nigerians join the rest of the world to celebrate Christmas, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on churches nationwide to celebrate with wisdom, vigilance and a deep sense of responsibility, citing prevailing economic and security challenges.

CAN president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, in his Christmas message to Christians on Wednesday, emphasised the sacred nature of the season while delivering practical security advisories to congregations.

“Christmas is a sacred season that reminds us of God’s abiding love, His gift of hope to humanity, and the triumph of light over darkness,” Okoh stated.

While acknowledging the nation’s difficulties, he asserted that the birth of Jesus Christ reassures Nigerians that God has not abandoned His people and that hope remains alive.

“The protection of human life is sacred and must remain paramount. Churches, especially those located in areas prone to security threats, are encouraged to take practical steps to ensure the safety and security of their worshippers.

“In places where adequate security presence is lacking, church leaders should prayerfully consider holding services in safer locations or smaller gatherings that allow for better protection of members,” he said.

While framing this guidance as an act of stewardship, the CAN president said that, “it is offered in love and care, not in fear, as we are called to be wise stewards of the lives God has entrusted to us.”

Okoh also appealed to security agencies to enhance their presence around places of worship during this season, and encouraged collaboration between churches and law enforcement for peaceful and hitch-free celebrations.

“Let us remember all Nigerians who are grieving, displaced or affected by violence and hardship,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to have a collective spirit of peace, justice and unity, that Nigeria is their only home and that its future depends on their collective resolve.

The CAN president expressed hope that the New Year will usher in renewed faith, healing and lasting peace for Nigeria.
