Bundesliga: Leverkusen, Bremen Await Boniface Surgery Decision

Victor Boniface is facing a major decision over his immediate future, with doctors in Leverkusen reportedly recommending knee surgery that could bring his season, and time at Werder Bremen, to a premature end.

According to Bild, medical staff in Leverkusen, where Boniface is expected to return by the summer of 2026, believe an operation may now be the best course of action for the Super Eagles striker’s lingering knee problem.

The possibility of surgery was already discussed in August, but the 25-year-old opted against it at the time.

Undergoing the procedure now would likely rule Boniface out for the remainder of the season, and he may not feature again for Werder Bremen after joining the club on loan at the end of the summer transfer window.

Despite the short-term setback, surgery could be a long-term solution to a persistent issue that has plagued the striker’s career, including two previous anterior cruciate ligament injuries.

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes and Werder’s head of professional football Clemens Fritz are said to be keen to agree on a joint approach.

Ultimately, the final decision will rest with Boniface himself, who has failed to score in 11 appearances for Die Grün-Weißen, starting just two of those games, after scoring 22 times across two Bundesliga campaigns with Die Werkself between 2023 and 2025.

According to Deichstube, Boniface must choose between surgery and playing through pain for the rest of the season, with Werder Bremen already contacting Bayer Leverkusen about cutting short his loan deal.
